What You Will Learn

This course provides students with a working knowledge of the Association of American Railroads (AAR) open top loading rules, as well as other pertinent Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations and BNSF directives. This course is designed to emphasize safe work practices and is required for all individuals loading freight or inspecting open top loads on BNSF property.

Course objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to comply with the appropriate AAR, FRA and BNSF rules, regulations and policies to:

1. Understand the responsibilities of the freight loader (shipper).

2. Determine weight distribution, load restraint and required clearances for figure loading.

3. Determine load support and load securement for floor blocking and tie downs.

4. Identify maximum allowable overhang for various types of freight cars.

5. Apply testing requirements and approval processes for moving freight.

6. Measure loads and determine the combined center of gravity.

Prerequisites: Basic understanding of AAR interchange rules and FRA Title 49, Section 215, 218, 231 and 232.

Required equipment: Safety-toed boots
