What You Will Learn
This course provides students with information on how to inspect, test and repair freight cars in a trainyard environment in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Association of American Railroads (AAR) and BNSF procedures and policies.
Course objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Efficiently navigate through the AAR Field Manual.
2. Efficiently navigate through the FRA-CFR 49 book
3. Explain the blue flag law.
4. Inspect and maintain safety standards.
5. Inspect and maintain safety appliances.
6. Inspect and maintain air brakes; make required adjustments.
7. Explain the operation and function of rear of train devices.
8. Identify the classes of hazardous materials.
9. Inspect and maintain the condition of wheels.
10. Inspect and maintain freight car truck components.
11. Inspect and maintain freight cars.
12. Inspect and maintain open top loads.
13. Compose bad order/home shop cards.
Required equipment: Safety-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves
