What You Will Learn
This course provides students with information on how to inspect, test and repair freight cars in a repair track environment in accordance with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), Association of American Railroads (AAR) and BNSF procedures and policies.
Course objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Efficiently navigate the AAR Field Manual.
2. Identify and repair defective brake rigging components.
3. Inspect and apply lubrication to hand brake components.
4. Inspect and analyze couplers for defects.
5. Identify defective gears and yokes.
6. Identify defective cushion units and uncoupling levers.
7. List the criteria for inspection and maintenance of doors, hatch covers and outlet gates.
8. Analyze and classify wheel and truck components for defects.
9. Inspect center plates and side bearings for defects.
10. Inspect and repair defective safety appliances.
Required equipment: Safety-toed boots, safety glasses, gloves
