Instructor

Mae Christenson

What You Will Learn

Learn how to design plant communities that are both ecologically functional and visually stunning using the matrix planting method. This approach combines dense layers of structural grasses, seasonal wildflowers, and groundcover species to create resilient, low-maintenance landscapes that support biodiversity and naturally suppress weeds.

What you’ll learn:

  • Matrix Basics: Understand the principles behind matrix planting and how it mimics natural ecosystems
  • Plant Layering: How to combine grasses, forbs, and ground-layer species for year-round interest and ecological function
  • Plant Compatibility: Selecting species that thrive together to build self-sustaining communities
  • Maintenance Reduction: Strategies to reduce watering, weeding, and chemical inputs through design

Course outcomes:

  • Create dense, layered plant communities that outcompete weeds and require less upkeep
  • Build pollinator-friendly habitats that flourish each season
  • Develop visually dynamic gardens that balance beauty and ecology
  • Gain skills to plan and implement matrix plantings tailored to your site and climate
