Introduction to Hieratic
What You Will Learn
This course is an introduction to the cursive, calligraphic script of the ancient Egyptians. Often compared to East Asian calligraphy, hieratic is the “priestly writing” of ancient Egypt. We will examine the types of documents that were written in hieratic, learn the fundamentals of how the script worked, and acquire basic hieratic vocabulary using the "Story of the Shipwrecked Sailor" as our guide. Prior study in Egyptian hieroglyphs is encouraged but not required.
This section is facilitated by an instructor online. Within 2 business days of the class start date, you will receive instructions about how to access the class online.
