Short Line Engineer Training Program
What You Will Learn
This intensive, eight-day course is designed to provide short line engineers with training on locomotive and freight car air brake systems, locomotive mechanical systems and basic train handling. Students have the opportunity to discuss how the content applies to real-life situations, and will participate in approximately 12 hours of hands-on Type II locomotive simulator training. The course is held at NARS in Overland Park, KS on the campus of Johnson County Community College.
Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
1. Describe how air flows through a locomotive and through a freight car.
2. Understand the basic function of an air brake system.
3. Perform periodic and system diagnostic tests on an air brake system.
4. Use the Timetable to adhere to safe and effective train handling.
5. Demonstrate safe and effective train handling over various types of terrain.
6. Understand power brake law.
7. Understand basic mechanical components and how they operate on EMD locomotives.
8. Locate, inspect and describe the purpose of the equipment on a train.
This course is designed to augment the employee's on-the-job training and experience, and is not a certification course, as each railroad designates which individuals are to be certified. Successful completion of homework and a final exam is required to earn the Certificate of Completion.
