What You Will Learn

Course description: This course provides students with information about the EMD locomotive schematic diagram and the operating logic of locomotive electrical systems. It includes detailed descriptions of basic locomotive systems including fuel, starting, battery charging and trainline control. A key outcome of the training is the student's ability to learn and apply safe and effective troubleshooting techniques.

Course objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Use schematic locator charts and switch tables to locate equipment on the schematic and on the locomotive.

2. Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the SD40-2 local control and trainline control systems.

3. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the SD40-2 locomotive electrical systems.

4. Describe and use safe and effective troubleshooting techniques for common locomotive electrical defects.

5. Identify symbols and nomenclature used in locomotive schematics and electrical systems.

This course must be taken before enrolling in EMD Loco Dash 2 Electrical Systems - Advanced (ELECNRR-013). The Advanced course must be taken within 18 months of completing the Basic course.
